Fact-Checking Standards

The verification steps our journalism goes through before publication.

Last updated June 30, 2026 · Owner: Research Desk

Verification by format

The depth of verification scales with the story:

  • News: every figure, name and quote is checked by the assigned editor.
  • Features and investigations: an independent fact-checker reviews the full piece against source material.
  • Research: methodology, sample and calculations are reviewed by a second analyst before release.
  • Opinion: factual premises are checked; arguments remain the author’s own.

Data and charts

Charts are built from source data that is retained and can be shared with readers on request. Every chart names its source and time period.
